How to edit

Types of error page

  • 403
    • This is displayed on a live site when someone tries to access a page or setting on your site they don't have user permissions to see
    • Anonymous users (anyone not signed in) will see it if they are sent a link to an unpublished page
    • Anonymous users will see it if they use a bookmarked link to a page which has subsequently been unpublished
  • 404
    • This can link people to your homepage or an information page you have provided when a page they have requested is missing

Create an error page

  • Create an error page before you add it to Basic site settings
  • Example 403:

You must sign in using your SSO credentials at the /user page to access content.

You may not have the appropriate user permissions to access this content.

  • Note: this isn't the message which displays when a site is restricted:

'You are not authorized to access this page.'

It isn't possible to change this message

Configuring site settings

  • Go to Settings > Basic site settings
  • Default 403 (access denied) page
    • This page is displayed when the requested document is denied to the current user. Leave blank to display a generic "access denied" page
  • Default 404 (not found) page
    • This page is displayed when no other content matches the requested document. Leave blank to display a generic "page not found" page
  • Search for the page you have created
  • Save configuration
