What is Figshare?

Figshare is an online, open-access repository accessible to Oxford users as the Sustainable Digital Scholarship (SDS) platform.

The SDS platform is highly suitable for publishing, sustaining and collaborating on research data, especially on projects that expect to be adding or editing data into the future. Unlike a data archive, files placed on the SDS platform remain “live” and editable while still being easy to cite and share.

Anyone with an Oxford SSO can use the platform, and embedding and sharing content on Fresco sites is covered by the reuse licence.

Further information is provided on the SDS site. Please note this was created for the Mosaic platform, but might be of general interest.

What is the Figshare Web Gallery?

SDS-Figshare Web Gallery (formerly the 'Mosaic widget') is a small service created in collaboration between Mosaic/Fresco team and SDS/Bodleian team.  It allows SDS Figshare items to be displayed as sortable listings on Mosaic and Fresco pages.  It consists of a Figshare Helper app that generates the correct code for you to be able to embed filtered versions of these web galleries and a Figshare Viewer app that formats the data correctly for Mosaic/Fresco to use.

Please note that you can only have one Figshare web gallery instance embedded on each website page.

How to embed a Figshare Web Gallery

  • Go to the Helper page at https://figshare.embed.it.ox.ac.uk/ to generate an embed code
  • Grid configuration: select number of rows and columns
  • Optionally, select the Project or Collection or Group ID of the group you want to use. For example, a Faculty, Department or individual research project
  • Optionally choose to add a search bar (only actioned if you have specified a Group or Project ID)
  • Click “Generate embed-code"

  • Go to your Fresco page and enter Edit mode.  Add the Embed component to a section level layout
  • Paste in the embed code

How Figshare Web Gallery appears

  • The embedded grid can be sorted by the end-user by posted date, views, or downloads
  • The end-user can also view the embedded content as a list
  • An example of it in use is the FeedSax sample content on the SDS site
  • Styling improvements will be made in a coming release to display content in line with the Fresco design framework
